Anniversary of the referendum on preserving the USSR

March 17th will mark 10 years since the referendum on preservation of the Soviet Union as a unified state. At that time, people voted for preservation of the USSR. But today, 10 years later, every fifth Russian (20%) said they don't remember the voting. Moreover, 40% of respondents could not recall the results of the referendum, and whether the Soviet people voted «for» or «against» preservation of the USSR.

As we know, soon after the referendum, the Soviet Union was in fact liquidated.

According to a majority of those surveyed (63%), there was a possibility to save the USSR as a state. Zyuganov followers (82%) and people over 50 (70%) are more likely than others to report their confidence in such a possibility. 23% of respondents think it was impossible to prevent the USSR's collapse. People with a higher education (34%) and people under 35 (32%) are more likely than others to think this way.
