What is happening in Ukraine?

26.04.2001 [report] [ Petrova A. ]

The mass-media today often reports_new on events in Ukraine. What do Russians think is happening there? 43% of respondents agree to answer an open-ended question on this subject.

Every third respondent (32%) thinks there is a political crisis in Ukraine. They believe the opposition is trying to remove Kuchma from his post, or a power struggle is going on; strikes, civil unrest, and riots are happening, too. Some respondents think a civil war has started in Ukraine.

5% of respondents think there is "chaos and anarchy," "arbitrary rule," and "a complete collapse."

Some respondents (3%) think that an economical crisis is coming to Ukraine ("a ramshackle economy," "the growth of prices, default, unemployment").

The point of view of another 3% of respondents is quite interesting. They think the motive behind events in Ukraine is found in foreign affairs: these events either involve "a battle to reunite Ukraine with Russia," or American influence ("they want to follow the American style of life," "America is taking power").

The Public Opinion Foundation. Russia-wide poll of urban and rural populations. April 21, 2001. 1500 respondents.
